The Company:
A well established sporting body based in Melbourne is looking for an experienced Competitions Manager to join their team on a 9 month maternity leave contract. The organisation manages and supports a large competition program across Victoria and works closely with clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers, venues and participants to deliver high quality sporting competitions and events. This is a great opportunity for an experienced sport, competitions or events professional to step into an established portfolio and provide leadership and continuity across a busy competition calendar.

The Role:
The Competitions Manager will be responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination and successful delivery of a portfolio of sporting competitions across Victoria. This role will provide leadership and support to Competition Coordinators while ensuring competitions are planned, delivered and reviewed to a consistently high standard. The position will oversee competition planning, venue requirements, workforce coordination, complaints, risk management, budgets and the ongoing improvement of competition systems, policies and processes. You will also maintain a forward focus on future competition requirements, including venue and competition planning 18 to 24 months in advance.
Key responsibilities will include: - Provide leadership, support and guidance to Competition Coordinators.
- Oversee competition priorities, milestones, timelines and deliverables.
- Ensure continuity across the competition portfolio during the maternity leave period.
- Monitor competition readiness and identify potential operational risks.
- Ensure competition rules, policies and procedures are implemented consistently.
- Support and develop a collaborative and accountable competition team.
- Oversee long term competition planning and maintain a rolling plan 18 to 24 months in advance.
- Lead post season reviews and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into future planning.
- Review and maintain competition rules, operating procedures and key documentation.
- Oversee venue sourcing, negotiations and long term venue planning.
- Maintain relationships with venue providers and ensure venue requirements align with competition needs.
- Provide oversight of ticketing models and venue specific ticketing requirements.
- Coordinate adjudicator allocations and competition workforce planning.
- Oversee staffing requirements including volunteers, casual staff and technical personnel.
- Support initiatives that improve adjudication processes and the overall competition experience.
- Oversee competition related complaints and support the management of complex stakeholder matters.
- Identify recurring issues, trends and risks and recommend improvements.
- Maintain strong relationships with clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers, committees, venues and key partners.
- Support Competition Coordinators in managing stakeholder expectations and operational issues.
- Ensure competition information and decisions are communicated clearly and consistently.
- Represent the organisation at competition related meetings and forums as required.
- Manage and monitor competition budgets and identify financial risks or variances.
- Prepare competition reports and operational updates for senior management.
- Maintain accurate competition records, documentation, policies and procedures.
- Ensure competition activities meet relevant governance, safety and organisational requirements.
- Contribute to broader organisational planning and strategic initiatives.
The Candidate:
The successful candidate will have experience leading the planning and delivery of competitions, sporting events or other complex operational programs.
You will be highly organised, confident managing multiple stakeholders and comfortable making decisions in a fast paced environment. Experience within a sporting body, membership organisation or community sport environment would be highly regarded.
The successful candidate will also have:
- Demonstrated experience leading competitions, events or complex operational programs.
- Experience supervising, supporting or developing staff.
- Strong understanding of community sport and member based organisations.
- Experience with long term competition or event planning.
- Strong venue management and stakeholder engagement experience.
- Experience managing budgets, expenditure and financial forecasting.
- Excellent organisational and project management skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and identify operational risks.
- Strong stakeholder management and relationship building skills.
- Confidence managing complex or sensitive matters.
- Strong problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience preparing reports and presenting information to senior stakeholders.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft 365.
- Experience with competition or membership management systems would be highly regarded.
- A valid Victorian driver's licence and access to a vehicle.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends during busy competition periods.
